What Can and Cannot Be Repaired

There are a few types of tire damage that can be repaired, including:

  • Cuts: Cuts that are less than ¾” can be repaired.
  • Punctures: Punctures that are less than ½” can be repaired.
  • Bulges: Bulges less than 2″ in diameter can be repaired.

However, there are also a few types of damage that cannot be repaired and will require a replacement tire instead, including:

  • Cuts greater than ¾”: If the cut is more than ¾,” it will not be able to be repaired and require a new tire.
  • Punctures greater than ½”: If the puncture is greater than ½,” it will not be able to be repaired and require a new tire.
  • Bulges greater than 2″: If the bulge is greater than 2″, it will not be able to be repaired and require a new tire.

When to Repair vs. Replace Tires

Tire Tread Depth

Checking the tread depth is one of the simplest ways to determine whether your tires need to be replaced. Tires have grooves called treads that help grip the road and provide traction, especially in wet or icy conditions. Over time, these treads can become worn down.

The minimum depth of the tread should be 4/32 of an inch, but ideally, it should be 6/32 of an inch or more. You can check the tread depth by inserting a penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head pointing down. You need new tires if all of Lincoln’s head can be seen, which indicates that the tread depth is less than 4/32 of an inch. If you can only see part of his head, your tread depth is between 4/32 and 6/32 of an inch, and you should consider new tires soon. If you can’t see any of his head, your tread depth is 6/32 of an inch or more, and your tires are fine for now.

Cracks and Bulges

Another way to tell if your tires need to be replaced is to look for cracks or bulges on the sidewall. These can be caused by everything from hitting a pothole to prolonged exposure to sunlight and heat. If you spot any cracks or bulges, it’s time for new tires.

Age

Even if your tires still have good tread depth and no visible damage, they may need to be replaced if they are more than ten years old. Tires naturally deteriorate over time even if they aren’t being used, so it’s best to err on the side of caution and get new ones every ten years or so.
